Our Story
Our mission at Winona's Angels is simple: to bring joy, love, and support to families facing hardship throughout our community. Founded in 2016 by Alycia, we are a community-based nonprofit that pairs families in need with generous sponsors who are eager to help during the holiday season.
Over the years, we've grown from a one-person effort into a dedicated team, each bringing unique skills, passion, and commitment to making a difference. Our journey began with one belief: that no child or family should be left behind during the holidays. Thanks to our incredible sponsors and volunteers, we have helped make the season brighter for nearly 100 families each year, and we look forward to continuing that tradition.
As our organization grows, so does our vision. While our holiday assistance program remains at the heart of what we do, Winona's Angels is expanding its efforts to support our community year-round through new outreach initiatives designed to bring people together and help neighbors support one another.
One of these new programs is Tech Buddies, a volunteer-driven initiative that connects community members with friendly, patient helpers who can assist with everyday technology challenges. Whether someone needs help setting up a new television, accessing email, learning how to use a smartphone, navigating online services, or simply understanding today's rapidly changing technology, Tech Buddies provides a trusted source of support and connection.
This is just the beginning. We are developing additional programs that share the same core mission: building stronger community connections, reducing isolation, and creating opportunities for people to help one another. By expanding our services beyond the holiday season, we hope to make a lasting impact throughout the year while continuing to spread kindness, compassion, and hope to those who need it most.
Meet Our Team While our mission remains unchanged, the faces behind Winona’s Angels have grown. What began as one person's vision is now a passionate and dedicated team working together to bring holiday cheer to those who need it most. Our team includes:
Winona’s Angels Board and Team
Mary Mattheis - Secretary, Winona’s Smiles Chairwoman
Hi, I’m Mary! Family and community mean everything to me, which is why being part of Winona Angels is so special. I’ve been married to my husband for 34 years and we have three beautiful, grown children!
When I’m not delivering surprises to people, I love hanging out with my friends and reading psychological thrillers!
My late sister and I always used to have a dream of starting a group such as the Angels. We loved the name as we each wrote about and collected angels since losing our mom at an early age (I was only 16). Like me, she also conducted random acts of kindness throughout her community daily. So when I started The Smile Group (now Winona Smiles) and was offered the chance to join forces with the Angels, I knew it was a no brainer! I miss my sis but this helps me keep her memory alive and I know she is now our angel guiding us.
I love helping create moments that make people feel seen, supported, and cared for. Whether it’s through Winona Smiles or simple acts of kindness, there’s nothing better than knowing you made someone’s day a little brighter.
It fills my heart to help bring a little light into someone’s day. Do you know of someone in need? Drop me a message!
Tammy Kerley - Treasurer
Hello, my name is Tammy Kerley, and I serve as the treasurer for Winona’s Angels.
I became involved with Winona’s Angels in February, and I truly love the work we do to support others in our community. My own children have been sponsored twice in the past, and seeing the joy on their faces meant so much to me. That experience is a big part of why I wanted to give back.
In my role, I handle record keeping for our committees, ensuring we maintain accurate receipts and proper documentation. I am highly organized and enjoy working with numbers, which makes this position a great fit for me.
I am also a single mom of three daughters who keep me on my toes. I love spending time outdoors and helping others whenever I can. One of my biggest goals is to teach my children the importance of kindness and giving without expecting anything in return.
For example, while at a store one day, I noticed an elderly woman in a motorized wheelchair struggling with her cart. I asked if she needed help, and my youngest daughter assisted in unloading her items while I helped place everything back into her cart after checkout. The woman was incredibly grateful, and seeing my daughter help make her day was more than worth the extra time.
I am hopeful that through my work with Winona’s Angels, we can continue to bring smiles and happiness to more people in our community.
If you see me out and about stop and say HI!
Heather Roberts - Vice President and Social Media, Branding and community outreach
I was originally brought on by Alycia a couple of years ago to assist with social media, and I’m grateful to have been asked to continue—and grow within the organization by our current president, Amie.
I now serve as Vice President, while also focusing on marketing, branding, and social media. In these roles, I enjoy finding creative ways to share our mission, connect with the community, and help our organization continue to grow.
I have always had a heart for helping others, which is reflected in my background as a volunteer firefighter, first responder, and my time working with the Salvation Army. Giving back and supporting my community has always been an important part of who I am, and it’s what drives my passion for being involved with this organization.
Outside of my work and community involvement, I enjoy spending time with my wonderful significant other and my two dogs, Lola and Ozzy. I value time with family, love getting creative through crocheting and beading, and spend as much of the summer as possible out on our pontoon, enjoying time on the river.
If you see me out in the community say HI!
Amie Kruger - President
Hi, I’m Amie, and I’m part of the team behind Winona’s Angels.
I’ve always had a heart for helping others, especially during the moments when life feels overwhelming and support can make all the difference. Being part of Winona’s Angels means showing up for our community in real, meaningful ways and that’s something I care deeply about.
In my role, I help connect needs with resources, organize efforts behind the scenes, and make sure people feel seen, supported, and not alone. Whether it’s coordinating help or simply listening, I believe even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
Outside of this, I’m a mom first. My kids are my world, and they’ve taught me so much about resilience, patience, and unconditional love. I also love being outdoors, good food, and finding beauty in the little things.
At the end of the day, I just hope people feel cared for, supported, and reminded that there are still good people out there.
If you see me out in the community please stop and say HI!
Alycia Lockwood - Founder
The heart and soul behind Winona’s Angels, Alycia founded the organization in 2016 with a clear vision: to help families in need experience the joy of the holiday season. Inspired by her own personal experiences of not always being able to provide the holiday she wanted for her family, she turned compassion into action. Her passion, dedication, and unwavering drive continue to inspire our mission today.
If you know Alycia, message her and say hi
